Stock Car Racing History (SCR) is a website devoted to preserving the entire Statistical History of NASCAR Racing.
Back in 1993, I was surfing the internet on my Acer 486SX computer, via "Prodigy" at the blazing speed of 2400 BPS, looking for information on NASCAR. I was trying to find statistics about Richard Petty, to be able to compare the "up and coming rookie driver", Jeff Gordon.
There were not many websites to get NASCAR information from, other than occasional newspaper sites. In those days, the sites left much to be desired, but I was finding some current information, but not finding much historical information.
I finally found some race results and started downloading, printing and compiliing what I could find in a spreadsheet. My spreadsheet quickly grew and grew to the point that it was becoming unmanageable. As my directory of files continued to grow, I was teaching myself database programming.
As was the case back in 1993, there wasn't a lot of websites with race data prior to the "Modern Era", which NASCAR defines as prior to 1975. In large part, I started developing a database to fill the very need for race fans who appreciate the history of the sport. I know now, there are some sites out there that have race results information available on a website. But I like having a "library" if you will, of information and a resource where I can look at all of the races throughout the history of NASCAR racing.
On April 7, 1997, I launched my first database. It has continued to grow as I think of more and more statistics to query and put into a report for within the database.
With that, I am a tradionalist, when it comes to racing. Die hard loyal to the drivers I like. However, on this site, I try to remain as objective as possible about racing, because the intent is to look at the statistics of racing. There are more than enough sites out there, with boards and Blogs and Facebook pages and Tweets that rant and rave about things both related to NASCAR and things not related to NASCAR.
My intent with developing the database as well as the website it to preserve the history, present statistics and provide a resource for race fans to have concise as well as accurate information.
I've had a website presence for a few years now, but I hadn't done a very good job of building, enhancing and maintaining the website. Sometimes, life dictates your priorities and where they will line up. All to often my "real job" would get in the way of my development time on the database, let alone any extra time to work on the website.
I've been working on the database preparing to "finish it", compile the database in a form that I can put on a distributable CD and then sell the database to those interested in the Statistical History of Stock Car Racing.
I "re-launched" this website on October 14, 2010 with the intent of having the database "caught up" by the end of the 2010 season. Additionally, with the exit of the UMI Publications NASCAR Press Preview, I have also set a goal to create a Season Recap e-book.
